Samsung Teases 'Slimmer and Lighter' Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5, along with Tablets and Watches

Updated: Aug 15, 2023

Samsung is gearing up to unveil its latest lineup of devices on July 26, and a teaser from TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, confirms the introduction of new foldables, tablets, and smartwatches. The upcoming devices include the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5, the Galaxy Tab S9 series, and Galaxy Watch 6 and Watch 6 Classic.

In a blog post prior to the Unpacked event, TM Roh highlights the design principles of being Essential, Innovative, and Harmonious that influenced the creation of these new devices. He particularly emphasizes the innovation behind the company's folding phones, stating that Samsung has elevated the standards in this category.

He notes that achieving slimness and lightness in a foldable device requires significant engineering breakthroughs, and the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 will surpass their previous generations in these aspects.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 are expected to adopt a new hinge design, eliminating the "hinge gap" present in previous models and contributing to reduced weight. These improvements will make the devices more ergonomic and user-friendly. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is projected to be only slightly heavier than the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Additionally, TM Roh emphasizes the harmony between devices to provide a connected experience. The upcoming tablets and smartwatches will work together seamlessly to offer users a cohesive and integrated digital ecosystem.

Samsung's Unpacked event will take place in South Korea, and reservations for the new devices are now open. For the first time ever, Samsung is offering a $50 credit to those who reserve their spot in line, which can be applied towards the cost of the device. The event will be broadcast live at 7 a.m. ET on July 26, and the tech world eagerly awaits the official unveiling of Samsung's latest innovations.
